Settle it on the Streets

There is a great disturbance in the basketball force. According the good people at Hoop It Up, Albuquerque, New Mexico, is America's top basketball city — that is complete and utter folderol. Folderol! I myself have witnessed feats of athleticism, grace and pure, nasty, raw power at the Heman Park courts that would cause Dr James Naismith to slap a Harlem Globetrotter. Ballers of St. Louis, defend your honor. The Hoop It Up 3on3 Tour returns to the River City this Saturday and Sunday (May 8 and 9; www.hoopitup.com), owing to overwhelming popular demand. Registration is closed as of Monday, May 3, but have no doubt that the city will be well represented in all of the 30 age and skill divisions. Games take place on the streets of 13th and Chestnut between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. both days, and spectators pay nothing to watch. Yes, watch and cheer, and prove to Hoop It Up that Albuquerque is to basketball what St. Louis is to losing: We have no familiarity with it at all.
