Shogun Assassin

When: Wed., Sept. 7, 8 p.m. 2016
Price: $5
Japanese manga Lone Wolf and Cub (created by twin geniuses Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima) transcended language and culture barriers to become an American cult classic. The comic follows the adventures of Ogami Ittō, formerly the Shogun's chief executioner, and his son Daigorō on their road to revenge against the Yagyū clan — a road that can only lead to hell, as Ogami well knows. Daigorō is barely a toddler, and he mutely watches from the safety of his heavily armed baby cart as his father carves a path through would-be assassins with impeccable swordsmanship. It's a bleak life, but restoring the family honor requires sacrifice. The series made the jump to the big screen in a six-film series in the '70s, which soon reached American shores and was eventually parodied in the Bob's Burgers' episode "Hawk & Chick" (we told you it transcended all barriers). The Strange Brew off-shoot of the Webster Film Series screens Shogun Assassin, a special American cut of the first two films, tonight at 8 p.m. at the Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Avenue, Maplewood; Tickets are $5.
