Your eyes are streaming, your cheeks are chapped and the snot is frozen on your upper lip — congratulations, you’re ice skating outdoors during a Midwestern winter! Why are you doing this to yourself? Because it’s fun, that’s why. Outdoor skating is a communal experience, as strangers laugh while trying to avoid breaking their asses, dodging those free-wheeling kids and wondering if they used a large enough sock roll in their speed-skating unitard. We’re all suckers for doing this, but we’re suckers together. Besides, if you skate at the Steinberg Skating Rink (400 Jefferson Drive in Forest Park; 314-361-0613 or www.steinbergskatingrink.com), you can warm-up afterwards in the Snowflake Café, which features après-skate classics such as toasted ravioli, mini tacos and beer. Holiday hours at Steinberg are 10 a.m. to midnight Wednesday through Saturday (November 26 through 29). Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Admission is $5.50 to $6.50, and skate rental is $2.50.
