Small Buildings: built, unbuilt, unbuildable

Architects are sculptors who work on a grand scale. But before that high rise or home can be built, it must be visualized. Architects first create their structures as small, precise 3-D models -- but sometimes form gains the upper hand on function, and the model becomes less practical and far more sculptural. Small Buildings: built, unbuilt, unbuildable, the new exhibit at the Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design, presents the architectural models of Alex Clouser, Michael Jantzen and Tianyi Zhang, among others. They range from the fanciful (Zhang's skeletal tree house bending toward the moon and clouds) to the conceptual (Clouser's house melted around the bell of a saxophone).

Opening reception 6-8 p.m. Fri., Mar. 13. Continues every day except Mon. through May 10. Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design (6640 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-725-1177 or Free admission.
