Something Old, Something New

The desire to tell a good story is a basic human need – we’re programmed to share our experiences. But despite humanity’s adaptability and versatility, we’ve fallen into a few set methods of sharing our stories. But there are options for new methods of storytelling, and Viewpoints is one such method. Created by a choreographer as an improvisational technique, Viewpoints was further developed for stage actors by Anne Bogart and Tina Landau. It allows for an actor to articulate through movement and gesture, opening up the storytelling possibilities beyond language. Primal, a theatrical piece conceived by Pamela Reckamp using the Viewpoints method, explores the wants and needs of people through music, movement, text and multimedia to create a story of people achieving their most basic and esoteric desires. It’s an old story told a new way. The Slightly Askew Theatre Company presents Primal at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday (October 9 through 18) at the Chapel (201 South Skinker Boulevard; 314-835-7415 or www.slightlyoff.org). Tickets are $15.
Thursdays-Saturdays. Starts: Oct. 9. Continues through Oct. 18, 2008
