St. Louis County Neighborhoods: South County

5591 Oakville Center; 314-892-0620 or click here for more info and a map

Happy Hour: Monday through Thursday 4 to 10 p.m., Friday through Sunday 4 p.m. to midnight; numerous $1 and $2 drink specials

For at least six hours a day, this Oakville bar adjacent to Crusoe's Restaurant could easily be renamed Croc's: Everything's a Dollar Drink-o-Rama. Because, starting at 4 p.m. daily, many drinks are. Buckets of six beers are six bucks. Well drinks are also just 100 pennies. High rollers can spend $2 for select shot specials. Use all the extra coin you're saving on drinks to sink into the many games on hand, such as pool, foosball, darts or bar-top games. (NTN trivia's always on; that's another freebie.) Six hours of cheap drinks isn't enough for you? Just wait for Friday, when happy hour keeps going all the way till midnight. It's not really happy hour at Croc's; it's a happy half-day. (KM)

Dulany's Grille and Pub
9940 Kennerly Center; 314-849-1554 or click here for more info and a map

Happy Hour: Weekdays 4 to 7 p.m.; $2 domestic bottles, $2.50 well drinks, $3 margaritas and glasses of white Zinfandel, $5 selected appetizers

With its strip-mall location, single flat-screen television mounted in the corner and just one Golden Tee game, Dulany's doesn't smack patrons over the head with look-at-me amenities. Instead, the friendly, tidy place turns the focus where it should be during happy hour: on service, bargains and camaraderie. And it's only the better for it. In addition to drink specials, a handful of appetizers of the toasted variety — that includes ravioli, cannelloni and artichoke hearts — are $5. Happy hour makes a comeback at 10 p.m., when its discounted late-night menu offers plenty of full-size plates for $7.50 and less. (KM)

Growler's Pub
3811 South Lindbergh Boulevard, Sunset Hills; 314-984-9009 or click here for more info and a map

Happy Hour: Weekdays 4 to 7 p.m.; $1 off twenty-ounce drafts, 70 cents off fourteen-ounce drafts; buy-one-get-one-free appetizers

Growler's claim to, fame, is its massive beer selection, which regularly tops some 130 brews. But it's not as if they drop you in some sudsy sea without a boat — the first seven pages of its drink menu serve as a nifty primer, complete with headings like "Matching Beer With Food" and "What Makes Beer an Ale or Lager." And, naturally, the best time to apply your newly acquired know-how is during happy hour. Thanks to its tall, lovely wood walls and stately stone fireplaces, Growler's manages to be spacious and cozy at once. Find a seat along the gently curving bar or in the lush biergarten when the weather's nice. (KM)

Stratford Bar & Grill
800 South Highway Drive, Fenton; 636-343-5757 or click here for more info and a map

Happy Hour: 6 to 8 p.m. daily; $1 house drinks, $2 long-neck bottles of beer, $3 you-call-it mixed drinks, $4 Bud Light pitchers, $5 bombs

Don't even plan to wear some jackass-y hipster "blue collar" outfit to the Stratford Bar & Grill — this place is the real thing, and it doesn't need, or want, your feigned enthusiasm. What it does appreciate are good people who like to drink $2 beers while watching a wall of TVs tuned to anything and everything, and nice, regular folks who treat the servers well — these are the kinds of women who endearingly call patrons "hon." In addition to the cheap drink specials, the Stratford serves up adult happy meals, complete with hand-formed steak burgers and crinkle French fries (no plastic toy accompanies this meal, but you won't miss it). Technically, these are not a part of happy hour but cost just six bucks, and they really put the "meal" in "happy meal." The Stratford also boasts ten pool tables and almost as many arcade games in its cavernous space, along with a jukebox, so you can rock out while hanging out. (AS)

7802 Gravois Road, south St. Louis county; 314-832-3560 or click here for more info and a map

Happy Hour: Monday 3 p.m. to close, Tuesday through Friday 3 to 6 p.m.; half-price well drinks and selected appetizers, $1.75 domestic drafts, $2.25 bottles

A pair of trademark sharks keep watch over Syberg's bar, while its brick walls are crammed with sports paraphernalia, neons, and framed pictures of family and friends, indicative of its many years as a south-county staple. (Yep, you're in the county here, but just a stone's throw from the city of St. Louis.) Though the bar area itself, with its seven flat-screens and odd bar games here and there, might not be huge, its happy-hour specials are: Well drinks and selected apps are half price, domestic drafts are $1.75, and bottles are 50 cents more. If you hate Mondays, this is your place; it's the only night each week when happy "hour" lasts all the way to midnight. (KM)
