Static Poetry

The perceptual tools of children when observing the world around them are so immediate and acute, they're inspiring to behold. Absent is the greater sophistication of an adult's viewfinder -- but so are the corresponding filters and associations. Artist Nicole Lemkemeier is fascinated by this process and created an exhibition to explore it further. Poetic Nature: Discovering the Audubon Center at Riverlands stems from a Center of Creative Arts program last winter where third-grade students at Flynn Park Elementary studied observational skills in relation to nature. The kids visited the Audubon Center, near the confluence of the Mississippi and the Missouri rivers, and were asked to take photos, draw pictures and write poems of and about the natural environment surrounding them. Lemkemeier then used their work as the springboard for her art, allowing the children's lenses to inform her own. This free exhibit in the Millstone Gallery at the Center of Creative Arts (524 Trinity Avenue, University City; 314-725-6555 or www.cocastl.org) opens with a reception at 6 p.m. Friday, October 10. The work remains up through Sunday, December 14, and the gallery is open daily.
Saturdays, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sundays, 11 a.m.-6 p.m.; Mondays-Fridays, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Starts: Oct. 11. Continues through Dec. 14, 2014
