Statistically Speaking

Economist Charles Wheelan made quite a few people feel better about their own intelligence with his first book, Naked Economics. Using non-jargon words and his witty style to illustrate how the mathematics of economics is used to predict the financial ebb and flow of society, Wheelan proved that most people really can understand what the federal interest rate is really all about. He brings a similar clarity to another feel-bad branch of mathematics -- statistics -- with his new book, Naked Statistics: Stripping the Dread from the Data. As the last national election showed, the people who can interpret statistics correctly often have a competitive advantage. Wheelan discuses Naked Statistics at 7 p.m. at the St. Louis Public Library-Central branch (1301 Olive Street; 314-206-6779 or Admission is free, and Subterranean Books will have copies of Wheelan's books for sale.
