Zach Galifianakis is an acquired taste, like olives or straight absinthe. His comedic stylings are not so much deadpan as they are the exhausted, thousand-yard stare of a man who has been battered to apathy by life. You either find that funny because there's someone worse off than you, or you're put off by the bleakness. This either/or proposition is perhaps why Jared and Brandon Drake's dystopian sci-fi film Visioneers, starring Galifianakis, never had a wide release and didn't get dumped to DVD until after Galifianakis' successful starring turn in The Hangover. But it's out now, and you can see Visioneers tonight at 9 p.m. at the Sci Fi Lounge (6010 Kingsbury Avenue; www.scifilounge.webs.net) as part of Sci Fi's ongoing Magic Mystery Thursday series. Galifianakis is George Washington Winsterhammerman, a "TUNT" at Jeffers Corporation, "the world's largest and most successful corporation." Jeffers' main line of business seems to be nothing more than perpetual, meaningless productivity for its employees. And now something is causing those ever-busy employees to explode — and George is exhibiting the early symptoms of being an exploder himself. It's the sort of role that calls for the peculiar gifts of a Zach Galifianakis. Admission is $3.
