Take the Evolutionary High Road

Remember when people threw paint on fur coats in the '80s? Yeah, those were the days; maybe Hummer drivers need to experience some angry liberal defacing of their property. No? Well, all things evolve, including people and their responses to gratuitous consumerism. "Changing Landscapes: The Automobile," the latest installment in the Cine 16 Vintage School Films program, deals with the evolution of Americans and the automobile. Not in a Transformers-type way, but as in the impact of the automobile on modern society — think economic, environmental and social, not Christine the killer car. The program includes the short inspirational film My First Job: Service Station Attendant and the teen cautionary tale (based on a true story!) Joy Ride: An Auto Theft; the CBS-produced Automobiles, the Great Love Affair documents how the car was changing lives and the economy back in 1966, and stars a youngish Harry Reasoner.
