For its new exhibition, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis features a photographer who leaves out the context while overwhelming with detail, and a sculptor whose work retains the flatness of painting while maintaining the tactile appeal of a three-dimensional object. Elad Lassry: Sum of Limited Views is the artist's first major museum exhibition, highlighting Lassry's tightly framed still lifes of common objects against backdrops of vibrant, saturated color. The effect is akin to leaving all the vowels out of a word; you can still read it, but what's missing makes you examine what remains more closely. Richard Artschwager: Hair is a collection of Artschwager's rubberized horsehair life-size sculptures of human figures; their edges smudged by the nature of their hairy substance, these shadow-people seem more like gestural drawings sketched large until you approach them. Both exhibits open with a free public reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, September 10, at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (3750 Washington Boulevard; 314-535-4660 or www.contemporarystl.org). The Contemporary is open Wednesday through Sunday, and both exhibitions remain up through Sunday, January 2. Regular admission is $3 to $5, and it's free on Wednesday and Saturday.
Wednesdays-Sundays. Starts: Sept. 10. Continues through Jan. 2, 2010
