The 39 Steps

When: Wednesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. Continues through Nov. 14 2015
Price: $20
John Buchan's adventure novel The 39 Steps was translated to film four times, most successfully by Alfred Hitchcock in 1935. Sixty years later Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon adapted that film for the stage as a spoof of spy thrillers. Patrick Barlow then reworked their script into the material's final (?) form, the Olivier Award-winning The 39 Steps. It's a complicated origin for a complicated piece. Four actors play more than 150 characters, re-create a plane crash onstage and basically exhaust themselves in order to present a rapid-fire romp about a man sucked into a massive conspiracy involving spies, ingenues and the fate of England. Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble undertakes The 39 Steps at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday (November 4 through 14) at the Chapel (6238 Alexander Drive; 314-827-5760 or Tickets are $20.
