The Birds Are Back!

Jan 4, 2006 at 4:00 am
Seven years ago, the United States Mint bumped our national bird off the flipside of the quarter-dollar. With three years still to go in the "50 State Quarters Program," there will be more dark coinage days ahead for eagle-lovers. Fortunately, the folks at the Missouri Department of Conservation are here to give our fine, feathered friends the respect they deserve as Eagle Fest takes flight. While the eagles' return to the quarter is a long time coming, every winter the bald eagle wings its way to Missouri, and Eagle Fest celebrates the occasion today with a family-fun assortment of music, crafts, stories and videos. This is a free event, so leave those non-eagle quarters at home and bring the whole nest to the Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center at 11715 Cragwold Road in Kirkwood. The fest runs from 1 to 4 p.m.; for more information call 314-301-1500.
