Ngozi Onwurah's stark, at times somber, film documents a white mother who undergoes a radical mastectomy while her black daughter pursues her modeling career. The film traces the implications these two decisions have for both mother and daughter and the effect it has on their lives. In particular, both women struggle to deal with redefining their notions of body image and its attendant relations to sexual and racial identity. While the film does deal, explicitly and very well, with these theoretical concerns, it is also simply a film about a mother's love for her daughter and a daughter's passionate reciprocating care. It's a lot of material to handle in under a half an hour, but Onwurah's careful direction and editing enable The Body Beautiful to take it all on with an understated grace.~ Brian Whitener, All Movie Guide
