The Coathangers

9 p.m. Monday, November 21. The Firebird, 2706 Olive Street.

Since the '50s, girl groups have been using rock & roll as a means to jettison skyward in a male-dominated music world. Laying the groundwork for liberated post-punk, bands like the Shaggs and the Raincoats would build the altar for future generations of female punks and riot grrls. Enter the Coathangers: The result of years of feministic rock evolution found in four Atlanta hellcats. Each of the four members' voices is her own respective instrument, and the band marries a varied vocal arsenal to feverish brothel rhythms. Thrashing out frenetic garage punk, the Coathangers manages to pay respect to its, uh...forefathers, while rocking by its own rules.

Rock & Roll Recipe: Add two-thirds Mika Miko with one-third Wild Flag and a dash of Kleenex to taste.
