The Empire of Crime Strikes Back

Popular wisdom maintains The Godfather Part II is the only sequel in the history of Hollywood that outshines the original. Francis Ford Coppola's second tragic opera is actually a prequel/sequel: Immigrant Vito Corleone (Robert DeNiro, mostly silent) kills guys and has children in old tenement New York, and mid-century Michael Corleone (Al Pacino, all controlled screams) loses his kids and builds a Transamerican crime empire from Tahoe. Plus, John Cazale teaches you how to catch a fish. Seriously, though, all parties involved are at the height of their powers; this is a definitive new Hollywood saga, Oscars all around, not to be missed — you can't refuse. The Godfather Part II screens at 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday (January 14 through 16) at Webster University's Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries). Tickets are $5 to $6.
