The Figgs

11 p.m. Saturday, June 9. Blueberry Hill's Duck Room, 6504 Delmar Boulevard, University City.

For twenty years the Figgs have played smart, sharp power-pop with the brashness and impetuousity of young punks. There's a gritty, shambling quality to the trio's songs, and its rough edges work as a foil against dynamite chops, high harmonies and a seemingly endless supply of hooks. Last year's Follow Jean Through the Sea packed a career's worth of ideas and sounds into one 30-minute dose. The title track wouldn't feel out of place on the next New Pornographers record, and "Regional Hits" stomps and struts with Stones-y abandon. The Figgs will back up Graham Parker at Friday night's Twangfest showcase, but the band itself headlines Saturday with Wussy, Slaid Cleaves and the High Strung.
