The First Secret City

When the Manhattan Project took place, St. Louis was among the first cities to refine uranium. For the next two decades, St. Louis performed classified work for the Atomic Energy Commission. The First Secret City documents the resulting nuclear waste problem in Bridgeton and other parts of the city. The film reveals the long-lasting effects of radioactive contamination, culminating the underground nuclear fire in the West Lake Landfill in Bridgeton and the effort to confront the issue. directors Alison Carrick and C.D.
