The terrifying neo-cool imagery of the '80s -- stark colors, sharp angles, chunky electronics made of black plastic -- has long been dormant. Beyond the Black Rainbow is a freak-out film described by director Panos Cosmatos as "Reagan-era fever dream inspired by '70s and '80s midnight movies.” The trailer bears this out: A girl is trapped at the Arboria Institute in futuristic 1983, controlled by glowing pyramids from Gary Numan’s table, and chased (rescued?) by a headless motorcycle suit. Think equal parts Scanners era Cronenberg, Kubrick and new-wave acid trip with a Tangerine Dream-esque soundtrack on a pipe organ, and there you are. The film screens at midnight (appropriately) July 6 and 7 at the Hi-Pointe Theatre (1005 McCausland Avenue, Richmond Heights; 314-644-1100), a local gem that still takes chances.
