This is the time of year for excess. In the case of credit card usage, that's a bad thing; but in terms of music, there's nothing wrong with a bit of excess. The holiday season sees every performing group in the metro area putting on a show (good excess), but you can easily go broke if you try to experience them all (bad excess). Fortunately, a few groups present their programs free of charge -- that's very much in tune with the giving spirit of the season, by the way. The University of Missouri-St. Louis Department of Music is one of these finer organizations, as its Holiday Classic Concert is gratis. For the grand sum of nothing, you get performances by the University Orchestra, the University Singers, and the University Community Chorus. Not bad at all. The show takes place at 7:30 p.m. in the Touhill Performing Arts Center on UMSL's campus (1 University Boulevard at Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-4949 or www.touhill.org).
