The last readers saw of attorney Rachel Gold, she was about to get hitched. When Michael Kahn's new novel, The Flinch Factor, catches up to her, she's a widowed mother who's thrown herself into the Frankenstein Case, a hopelessly mired lawsuit pitting a working-class neighborhood against developers intent on building a gated community on top of them. The seemingly unconnected case of a handsome contractor's death has numerous parallels to the Frankenstein Case, drawing Gold deeper into a web of murder and disappearances. How does it all tie into Judge Howard Flinch, reputedly the worst and most unpredictable judge in all of Missouri? Trust in Gold -- she'll put it all together or get broken in the process. Michael Kahn discusses and signs copies of The Flinch Factor at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, at St. Louis County Library Headquarters (1640 South Lindbergh Boulevard, Frontenac; 314-994-3300 or www.slcl.org). Admission is free, and copies of The Flinch Factor will be sold onsite by Left Bank Books.
