Have you all read Tom Sawyer? It's the Big Read selection for our fair town, you know, and the more people who read it, the more varied the public discourse will be. But perhaps a few little things (Super Bowl, Mardi Gras) have eaten up all your reading time, and you're a little behind. That's all right; there's an easy and completely legit bit of "cheating" you can take advantage of to catch up, and it ain't CliffsNotes. The Assorted Short Adventures of Tom, Huck and Becky, a new musical play from The DisAbility Project and That Uppity Theatre Company, features several classic scenes from Tom Sawyer performed by actors who happen to be in wheelchairs. Even if you've read the book and are well versed in everything Sawyer, you'll enjoy seeing Tom (Margaret Jorgensen) and Becky's (Ana Jennings) rocky courtship (Tom's been engaged before, you know) and their deadly game of cat and mouse with Injun Joe played out in a perspective different from your own. Steve Givens and Michael Hall provide the period-appropriate folk music. The Assorted Short Adventures of Tom, Huck and Becky is performed at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, February 18 and 25, at the 560 Center (560 Trinity Avenue, University City; Admission is free, but call 314-863-2865 for reservations.
