The Secret Life of the American Teenager

While life as a teen has never been as difficult as it is in 2012, it's also never been this interesting. Along with 21st-century freedom of expression comes discrimination, bullying, otherness. We tell them it gets better, and it does, but optimism for the future doesn't change the present. This makes creative outlets for youths imperative, and it's thrilling to see what these rapidly changing young adults have to say about their experiences. Ritenour High School students have spent weeks learning about composition, lighting and other photography basics, and now they channel their angst, passion, determination and creativity to present Autobiography of a Teen. The exhibition combines self-portraits and other autobiographical images with texts and poetry, forming a multimedia journey through the wonder years. The free exhibition will line the walls of the Rock Road branch of the St. Louis County Public Library (10267 St. Charles Rock Road, St. Ann; 314-994-3300 or www.slcl.org) May 29 through June 30.
