The Song, the Film, the Holiday

The Hi-Pointe concludes its December triad of holiday movie classics with White Christmas, the top-grossing film of 1954. Apparently everybody loved this movie -- except the critics (but what do they know?). What's not to like? Consider the components: Bing Crosby croons beloved Irving Berlin songs to Rosemary Clooney; Danny Kaye is a surprisingly dexterous dancer in musical numbers with Vera-Ellen. Toss in sarcasm from (St. Louis' own) Mary Wickes; add the avuncular Dean Jagger as a beloved Army general. Film it all in wide-screen VistaVision, and what more do you need? Well, maybe a plot, but you can't have everything. White Christmas just might be the most mindless holiday movie of them all -- which is why it invites repeat viewings. Much of it is so forgettable, every time you see the film is like the first time. And here's the kicker: It somehow becomes more enjoyable with every passing year. The musical screens on Saturday morning, December 14 at 10:30 a.m. at the Hi-Pointe Theatre (1005 McCausland Avenue; 314-664-1100 or www.hi-pointetheatre.com). Tickets are $5.
