Scott Miller's new musical, Johnny Appleweed, is as pro-marijuana as that title would imply — but it's not just a Cheech & Chong adventure set to music. Titular character Johnny crosses America to confront the president about the job he's doing; Johnny hooks up with a motley crew along the way (lesbian performance artist, closeted Republican, a former televangelist and Jesus Christ) and enlists them in his mission. Miller states that the central crux of his musical is that democracy only works when the people are engaged in the process of governing. A radical concept indeed, especially when delivered through songs such as "I Tapped That Ass" and "Cannabis Dei," not to mention the guaranteed show-stopper, "Fucking Up America." New Line Theatre delivers the gospel of Johnny Appleweed at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday (October 12 through November 4) at the ArtLoft Theatre (1529 Washington Avenue; 314-534-1111 or Tickets are $15 to $18.
Thursdays-Saturdays. Starts: Oct. 12. Continues through Nov. 4
