The breezy, reggae-influenced rock crafted by popular '80s band the Unconscious was both of and before its time. Although influenced by British music (spooky two-tone ska, the lighter side of the Psychedelic Furs, Prefab Sprout's pristine pop) and the funk-rock popularized by Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fishbone, the group's sound presaged the rise of Rusted Root, Jack Johnson and G. Love & Special Sauce. Post-Unconscious, most of the band has remained in music: Drummer Matt Tecu is a successful LA session man, while other members have gone on to play with Devon Allman, Swing Set and Black Hand Sand. Since reuniting, the band has reissued its original record on CD and started writing new songs, while this Pageant show will be filmed for a live DVD, which is set to be released next year.
