The Warlocks

Friday, July 22; Mississippi Nights (914 North First Street)

When a band takes on the name that both the Grateful Dead and the Velvet Underground once claimed as their own, it's either bound for rock glory or destined for self-important silliness. With this generation's Warlocks, there's a little of both. The seven-piece outfit -- which includes four guitarists and two drummers -- brings a loud, swirling, Spiritualized-style wall of sound it refers to as "sonic space-age doo-wop" and wields an aggressive sense of power that occasionally veers off into a pounding psychedelic wonderland. Still, the group does manage to keep itself neatly aligned with the giant space sounds of a few light years past -- and it's hard not to have fun when listening to blistering tracks like "Skull Death Drum Jam" or hearing the channeled spirit of Jesus and Mary Chain on "Bleed Without You Babe."

Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door; call 314-421-3853 for more information.
