They Bring the Art

You bring the eyes

When you think "visual art," paintings and sculptures and the like are most often what spring to mind, leaving dance to hang out with theater in the performing-arts category. This point of view is not entirely incorrect, of course — dancers are indeed performers — but there is such a visual component to all dance concerts that it seems as if the art form should perhaps be awarded dual-category status, especially when events like Dance St. Louis' Spring to Dance Festival come along ( This energetic three-day extravaganza provides mucho eye candy through performances of ballet, modern, flamenco, jazz, tap and even more for just $10! Witness this beauty of movement as presented by companies from all over the Midwest — Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, St. Louis' Modern American Dance Company (MADCO), Indianapolis' Dance Kaleidoscope, BalletMet Columbus, Missouri Contemporary Ballet (pictured) and other regional companies large and small — Thursday through Saturday (May 22 through 24) at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-4949 or The fest kicks off at 5 p.m. each evening with some pre-show fun (including drumming, tango demos and an intimate dance showcase), and the big performance begins at 7 p.m. Whew! That's a lot of dance! And even though you have to enjoy it all at the Touhill since you can't take any of the dancers home with you (like you could a painting), this will definitely be an experience to add to your collection.
