Maestro Hans Vonk conducts members of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra with local musicians in a chamber-music concert featuring works by Stravinsky at the Sheldon Concert Hall. (see Concerts)

Local authors Ronice Branding and E. Hammond Oglesby discuss the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Missouri Botanical Garden. (see Literary Events)

The Frank Fowle Family Theatre Series continues with Norman Foote's production of Pictures on the Fridge, on the stage of the Center of Contemporary Arts. (see Performing Arts)

The Atrium Gallery hosts two openings tonight: a collection of figurative and still-life paintings by Julio Larraz, titled Paintings: Works on Canvas and Paper; and painter/printmaker Steven Sorman's Print Work: New Editioned Prints and Monotypes. (see Exhibit Openings)

Historyonics Theatre Company presents a historical dramatic production of A Seat in the Front: Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Bus Boycott, running for six shows over the next two days at the Missouri Historical Society Library and Research Center. (see Performing Arts)

St. Alphonsus "Rock" Church hosts the fifth annual Celebration of African Heroes and Sheroes Holiday Expo, with merchants' booths, art and artistic presentations, through Jan. 18. (see Special Events)

Sunday/17
Peacemakers hosts We Are the Dream, a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration with musical acts and videotaped presentations from a variety of social and cultural backgrounds, at the Keating Center at Kirkwood High School. (see Special Events)

SOR4: The Return of Ska-O-Rama, a concert featuring 10 of the best Midwest ska bands performing to benefit the Humane Society of Missouri, is held at the St. Louis Casa Loma Ballroom. (see Concerts)

Monday/18
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. High School Basketball Classic, featuring six of our region's outstanding teams, begins at 2:30 p.m. with a game between the Cardinal Ritter and University City boys' teams. Next is a match-up between the East St. Louis and Kansas City Northeast girls' teams; then the final game, between the East St. Louis and Vashon boys' teams, tips off at 6:30 p.m. at Kiel Center. River Styx magazine and Left Bank Books host an evening of readings by Richard Burgin, Allison Joseph and T.C. Boyle at Duff's Restaurant in the Central West End. (see Literary Events)
