'Tis the Season for Tradition

Saint Louis Ballet kicks off more than a week of The Nutcracker with a full-length performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday, December 8, at Washington University's Edison Theatre (6445 Forsyth Boulevard). The tale of a young German girl who dreams of a nutcracker prince is beautifully told through the choreography of Saint Louis Ballet artistic director Gen Horiuchi. Sit back as professional dancers and students of all ages gracefully guide you through the story's holiday festivities, fighting, snowy weather and celebratory dancing. If you haven't seen it before (the television version doesn't count), know that the Sugar Plum Fairy's dance is lovely enough to take the Scrooge out of anyone. A narrated children's version and full-length performances are offered throughout the run (through Tuesday, December 19); for times visit www.stlouisballet.org. Tickets cost $25 to $35; make a purchase through MetroTix (314-534-1111 or www.metrotix.com) or at the Edison box office (314-935-6543).
