Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 18. Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, 14141 Riverport Drive, Maryland Heights.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers has aged as well as any classic rock act has. This is because it's never veered from its musical strengths — in-the-pocket, blues-based rock & roll with a Brit Invasion edge — and because each member of the band understands his role. Petty mastered the four-chords-and-a-hook form in his twenties, and the years have only added deeper appreciation for country, soul and blues to those ridiculously catchy hooks. The core of Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench and Ron Blair, meanwhile, continues to play like unassailable virtuosos. On this year's Mojo, those musicians prove they can blow your mind at any time, but mostly they just serve Petty's romantic melodies and gritty whine, even if the songs never connect with the force of his greatest hits. In concert, expect that connection to be as deep and exhilarating as the band's legacy.
