Toots & the Maytals

Sunday, April 3; VooDoo Lounge at Harrah's Casino (777 Casino Center Drive, Maryland Heights)

Those poor folks -- and there are many -- for whom reggae music means the copy of Bob Marley's Legend they listened to while taking bong hits in their dorm room don't know what they're missing. Hacky-sackers who think "One Love" is the height of reggae soul need to check out Toots Hibbert, the James Brown of Jamaica, the man who coined the term "reggae," a man with so much soul he can take a John Denver tune ("Take Me Home, Country Roads") and make it funky. Toots & the Maytals may be the purest example of reggae as a reinterpretation of American R&B and funk: Songs like "Pomp and Pride," "Pressure Drop" and -- sweet Jesus -- "Funky Kingston" will knock the kink out of your stinky white-boy dreadlocks. More than 30 years after its debut album, this band still cooks. Drop the bong and grab a Red Bull, 'cause you're going to be dancing tonight.

Show at 8 p.m. Tickets are $18-$20; call 314-770-8100 for more information.
