Unconventional Artists

Apes in the wild face a precarious present and quite literally no future unless we do something now to halt their steep decline. These highly intelligent and socially complex animals are, by dint of their very nature, extremely vulnerable. They live in small groups, don't produce many offspring, are hunted by poachers for bushmeat, and their forest habitat in Africa and Asia keeps shrinking, owing to logging and agricultural encroachments. It's a bleak scenario, but we St. Louisans can do something that makes a difference: attend the Great Apes Paint Exhibit and Fundraiser this evening at the SOHA Studio + Gallery (4915 Macklind Avenue; 314-497-5202 or www.sohastudioandgallery.com). This free event features artworks executed by the gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans of the Saint Louis Zoo, alongside portraits of the ape artistes by photographer Jess Dewes. All of the work is available for purchase, and a big chunk of the proceeds go toward aiding the zoo's vital ape-conservation efforts. Tonight's opening reception lasts until 10 p.m.; the exhibit remains up through Saturday, November 16.
