Vieux Farka Touré

In a sad bit of synchronicity, singer and guitarist Vieux Farka Touré released his 2006 debut album just months after the passing of his father, the Malian music legend Ali Farka Touré. Where the elder Touré put the music of Mali on the map by blending native tones and rhythms with American blues music, Vieux hews closer to the traditions of his homeland. His latest, Fondo, illustrates his technical breadth: On it he uses both short, hypnotic phrases and searing electric leads. In a nod to the tightening gap between musical cultures, Touré's songs have proven particularly receptive to remixes. On Other Roads: Fondo Remixed, various producers amplify the polyrhythms and push the bass to rave-worthy levels.— Christian Schaeffer
