For Chance and Money, two young African Americans with dreams of hip-hop success, the fight before them is one of artistic purity. Will they take the easy route to fame and fortune with party raps about money and women or will they stay true to themselves and make music about what they know: economic hardships, life on the wrong side of the tracks and life back in the civilian world after a tour of duty in Iraq? Steve Broadnax and Michael Bordner's new musical Smash/Hit! fuses the classic story of the struggle to be heard with hip-hop beats laid down by a DJ and drummer live onstage to create something new. The Black Rep presents Smash/Hit! at 7 p.m. Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday (April 24 through May 18) at the Grandel Theatre (3610 Grandel Square; 314-534-3810 or There's one 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, May 18.
