The egg is a feminine symbol, one that sparks images of new life. Artist Stephanie Liner plays on this idea by constructing large upholstered eggs with windows in them; look through the portal and you'll find a woman sitting inside. The fragility of the egg is emphasized by its human "embryo," who could easily damage the structure if she moved too forcefully. Liner's eggs and orbs riff on our concepts of gender roles and voyeurism, in addition to being beautiful, magical objects in their own right. Stephanie Liner: Momentos of A Doomed Construct, an exhibition of her work, opens with a free pubic reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, September 6, at the Craft Alliance in Grand Center (501 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-7528 or www.craftalliance.org). Momentos of A Doomed Construct remains up through Sunday, January 26, and the gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday.
Wednesdays-Sundays. Starts: Sept. 6. Continues through Jan. 26, 2013
