Will Hoge

Wednesday, October 5; Blueberry Hill's Duck Room (6504 Delmar Boulevard, University City)

When Will Hoge released 2000's Carousel, he walked a thin line between nondescript, Counting Crows-style frat rock and truck-commercial-friendly neo-country. But 2003's Blackbird on a Lonely Wire -- which ratcheted up the noise and picked up bluesy guitar wail -- found the Nashville singer/songwriter making a bid for pop stardom with the slick, straight-ahead rocker "Secondhand Heart." Hoge then dove headfirst into the heavily populated waters of the politically motivated folk singer on the America EP. Unfortunately, songs like "Bible vs. Gun" (an anti-war song written from the perspective of a regretful soldier writing home to his poor mama) and "Hey Mr. President" (a jangly dress-down of GWB) made Hoge sound like a rhyming-obsessed college kid eager to prove his cred at open-mic night. Still, haters rest easy: This current tour is in support of a forthcoming new studio album, Hearts Are Gonna Roll.

Show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10; call 314-727-4444 for more information.
