Will You Take a Czech?

OK, so St. Louis doesn't have a Czech-American equivalent to traditional ethnic neighborhoods like the Hill or Dogtown. But between St. John Nepomuk Chapel (the oldest Czech Catholic church in the United States) and the still-thriving American Czech Educational Center (ACEC), the sons and daughters of Bohemia have left their mark on the city, too. Throw down Ceská-style at the Czech Festival at the ACEC (4690 Lansdowne Avenue), and raise a Pilsner Urquell in salute to the old country. Various Czech-centric crafts, merchandise and activities transform the hall into a pocket Prague for a day, the air redolent of sauerkraut, goulash and liver dumpling soup. The St. Louis Czech Express and the St. Louis Button Box Club provide appropriately accordion-heavy musical accompaniment. Doors open at 11 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. Admission is free. See or call 314-832-8998 for more.
