Worth the Weight

Weightlifting can do a variety of things for the person who sticks with it. Firstly and obviously, it will change your physique over time, but to look like the ripped specimens in the infomercials you'll need to hoist serious iron most days of the week. If you have a life to lead and don't want to resemble the Hulk, more modest strength training will tone your muscles and boost your heart -- and your mental state. Yup, weightlifting is good for depressives and/or overly anxious types. Ask Marshall Cohen. As a young man this St. Louisan battled depression and the aimlessness it fed, but gym workouts helped him so much he decided to help others in turn. Cohen opened Lift for Life Gym for disadvantaged urban kids; it eventually expanded into Lift for Life Academy, the first independent charter school established in St. Louis city. Hear this good man relate his inspiring saga tonight at Barnes & Noble's Ladue Crossing store (8871 Ladue Road, Ladue; 314-862-6280 or Cohen will be promoting his book Rough Cuts: A Man, a Plan and a Gym -- Uplifting Stories from the St. Louis Hood. The 7 p.m. event is free.
