Writing From the Front

If there's any commonality in the lives of American soldiers who have survived the chaos of war, it's that many experience trouble re-adjusting to the normalcy of home. How do you deal with life outside of the pressure cooker of the war zone? One method is for the soldier to write about his or her experience -- what they saw and felt while serving, what they feared, what they missed, what they lost and what they found out about themselves. The Warrior Arts Alliance and the Missouri Humanities Council jointly offered writing instruction and a creative, therapeutic outlet for our returning soldiers, which eventually resulted in a great deal of fine writing on war by the people who fought for our country. Proud to Be: Writing by American Warriors is the inaugural edition of an annual anthology that will feature the best prose and poetry written by veterans of all American military conflicts. The St. Louis Poetry Center hosts a book launch party for Proud to Be tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Focal Point (2720 Sutton Boulevard, Maplewood; 314-973-0616 or www.stlouispoetrycenter.org). Many of the contributing writers will be present to read their work. Admission is free, but bring money to buy a copy of the book and maybe donate a little something to keep the workshops going.
