You Know That I Love 'Cakes 

In the winter of 1893, the pancake was invented for the benefit of all humanity. Before that fateful morning, the American breakfast options were limited to a big mess of nothing or a plate full of birch bark piled high and smothered in syrup. This terrible breakfast was made palatable (barely) by the addition of a jigger of corn whiskey and a side of salt pork. That nightmare is long past, and let us never speak of it again, for now we have the glorious, delicious pancake: a golden, mouthwatering disc of pleasure, a haven for butter and a greedy floodplain for a deluge of syrup. A breakfast so delicious, sometimes we even hold off on the jigger of corn whiskey (the salt pork is never spurned).

This morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Black Bear Bakery (2639 Cherokee Street; 314-771-2236) celebrates the pancake at the fourth annual All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast. For the suggested donation of $7, you can enjoy the Black Bear's organic pancake options (whole grain, multigrain, corn cakes and vegan) until the fork falls from your nerveless fingers. The money raised goes to help the Confluence newspaper, and you, of course, receive the benefit of pancakes.
