Chess feels ever more fashionable lately, and it's certainly more visible here in town, what with the prominently located Chess Club & Scholastic Center of Saint Louis, based in the Central West End. But while the game is increasingly popular, chess hasn't really been considered fashionable in the Project Runway sense — that is, until now. The world's best chess player, nineteen-year-old Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, also happens to be a model for G-Star RAW Denim, and at the G-Star RAW Fashion Show & RAW World Chess Challenge event, held at 11 a.m. at Bar Italia (13 Maryland Plaza), we'll have a chance to revel in the fashionable game and its fashions. The challenge part of the event takes place in New York City, where Carlsen will take on the chess world, including St. Louis' own Hikaru Nakamura (Nakamura will be one of three grandmasters submitting moves that the public can vote on to counter Carlsen's, thus enabling the world's participation in the game). The match will be broadcast live at Bar Italia, which will be serving up food, and Loop boutiques Sole and Blues will be showing G-Star denim. RSVP to attend the free event by calling the Chess Club at 314-361-2437, and visit to learn more.
