It's-a Mario in Space!

Flashback moment for millennials: where were you when you first experienced the joys of Super Mario Galaxy? Well, if you don’t remember, get ready for a do-over because Nintendo is releasing Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the Switch and the Switch 2! It’s the nostalgia moment we’ve been waiting for since we last put down our Wii controllers in 2012 to pick up that second shift at the avocado toast shop.

One of the highlights of the Mario Bros. journey, Super Mario Galaxy launched into the world in 2007 for the Wii, and was almost instantly hailed as a masterpiece. Critics loved the gravity mechanics, the sweeping orchestral soundtrack, and the planet-hopping aspect of gameplay. For fans, it wasn’t just a game — it was Nintendo offering them the same joy they felt as kids playing Mario 64 for the first time. Super Mario Galaxy 2 doubled down on the awesome with Yoshi, new power-ups, and even harder levels. Both titles have every right to sit comfortably on the “best games ever made” list.

You can go ahead and preorder so you’re ready to fly, but the Starship will return on October 2, 2025. Mario’s been floating around in space for years, and now he finally gets to have a landing spot in your living room again. Expect smoother graphics, updated controls, and one or two quality-of-life tweaks that make gameplay even more fun. This isn’t just a port of call, it’s Nintendo dangling a Super Star of nostalgia right in front of our wallets — and yours truly will absolutely be falling for it.

For many gamers, these weren’t just another world to conquer. They were childhood cornerstones, and the reason half of us have an emotional attachment to Lumas. Who didn’t love riding Yoshi through space while sipping hot chocolate? Tilting the Wiimotes to collect Star Bits while the Bagel Bites cooked in the microwave? Developing a crush on Bowser in HD that we’re pretty sure informs our current literature choices? Millennials and Gen Z gamers can finally share our experience with new audiences, and some of us are frigging stoked.

Two of Nintendo’s greatest hits are finally back (almost), and they’re going to be better than ever. Whether you’re replaying for the nostalgia of it all or showing your kids one of the gems of your Wii days, this one is a must-grab. So charge up your Joy-Cons, grab a Fire Flower, and get ready to go intergalactic all over again. At long last, Mario will be waiting at the launch pad.
