It's Not Just For Celebrities Anymore!

Good news for international OnlyFans creators with their eye on content creation in the U.S.! The government is handing out elite artist visas to influencers and adult content creators like candy. That’s right, the majority of O-1B visa awardees are now content creators and influencers rather than Mozart wannabes and European celebrities bound for Hollywood. The power dynamics around art and income are shifting as the definition of what makes creativity high-quality art changes with the times.

For those of you who have never had the honor of learning about visas, the O-1B is a nonimmigrant U.S. visa for “individuals with extraordinary ability in the arts or extraordinary achievement in the motion picture or television industry.” Traditionally, it’s been used by dancers, actors, musicians, designers, and visual artists. Y’know, people whose resumes involve regular gigs, galleries, and the kinds of award shows that come with red carpets and high-profile press credentials. The requirements are incredibly strict. Applicants are required to prove acclaim in their field via critical reviews, awards, leading roles in films or on high-profile stages, national recognition in their home country, or even international recognition across the globe. Historically, lawyers have used “industry benchmarks” like Oscars, Grammys, juried shows, and national press coverage to make a case for their clients. In immigration, there’s an implication that the U.S. still thinks art means mainstream media, or the kind of fine art you can find in boujie galleries and on internationally recognized stages.

Recently, there’s been a bit of a digital takeover, and influencers and OnlyFans creators have been dominating the numbers of O-1B applicants. We’re talking a HUGE majority of the filings and approvals being made up of influencers and OnlyFans creators. Metrics that used to be meaningless for immigration (things like subscribers, revenue, engagement, brand deals, and sponsored posts) have become quantifiable proof of “extraordinary ability.” Immigration lawyers have been arguing that “online influence + revenue + cultural footprint = indisputable proof of extraordinary ability.” For better or worse, this fully flips the O-1B playbook.

With this being the moment that we’re in, OnlyFans creators are uniquely suited to it. They already control all of their content and their brand. There are no gatekeepers, studio bosses, or museum curators to wait on. They’re fully self-funded, they’re digitally native, and they are frequently operating million-dollar businesses from a smartphone. Measurable metrics? It’s literally right there on their profile. Number of subscribers, tiers, special content, and engagement stats. With traditional performers like, say, ballerinas, they might have the reviews, but they can rarely follow those up with consistent daily earnings.

With all of that in mind, what exactly counts as art that contributes to a well-rounded society? Is it the canvases or the commerce? Is it opera house accolades or the subscriber count? Historically, art and “serious achievement” have been policed by critics with standards that match high society, galleries that also cater to high society, funding bodies, and large institutions. Now, the actual paying public are the arbiters of what is and isn’t art. Fans vote on their favorites with their dollars, and if that’s not cultural influence, then I don’t know what is. OnlyFans creators aren’t just spicy entertainers. They’re business owners, community builders, and brand architects who have built six- to seven-figure businesses from nothing. All of the old hierarchies are being challenged here: publicly accessible and affordable entertainment vs. exclusive artistic salons. Digital reach is fully duking it out with the old credentialed gatekeepers. When a banker, politician, or dancer hears “extraordinary ability,” what do you think they’re picturing in their mind, and what do you think that says about their perceptions of class, gender, and labor? This shift in O-1B visa applications is pro-creator and pro-worker, especially for women and marginalized populations who have been systematically excluded from classical art institutions. An erosion of standards this is not. A democratization of standards? Absolutely.

Will some critics screech from the digital rooftops that Sexy Instagram Girlies selling nudes on OnlyFans isn’t “real art?” Well, yeah. They will. I, however, can’t hear them over the sound of the influx of women entrepreneurs who are claiming more and more ground in the digital economy. Some are concerned that the O-1B might be “cheapened,” but here’s a challenge to consider: why should success on a global and digital stage count any less than niche gallery exhibits? Cultural value isn’t singular or static, and I am prepared to die on that hill.

The reality is that the U.S. is catching up with the future of creativity that the rest of the world has been enjoying for a minute now. If influence, money, and ingenuity are the metrics we’re measuring against, then the only thing the ancient gatekeepers of “what is art” are protecting is their own relevance and curated circle of very specific artists. OnlyFans creators are artists in their own right, and watching them take center stage during the digital renaissance is really fun to watch. Stage performers might get applause, but OnlyFans creators have the financial backup.
