El Borracho Mexican Cantina will open its doors to the public on Tuesday, December 16, at 2001 Locust Street. This is the former location of Nectar, and the team behind that establishment (as well as the Pepper Lounge and Mandarin), joined by the team from Mike Shannon's Steaks & Seafood, is behind El Borracho.

From the press release:

El Borracho's menu, created by executive chef/partner John Griffiths, features affordable fresh authentic Mexican food that is "drunk" with flavors -- patrons will be able to customize signature items such as tacos, burritos and tamales in either authentic Mexican or Americanized "Gringo" style. El Borracho will also feature specialty drinks made with fresh-squeezed juices such as the signature Borracho margarita, an exotic avocado-mango magarita, and the Paloma cocktail, a southern Mexican favorite made with Jarritos grapefruit soda.

El Borracho will be open from 4 p.m.-1:30 a.m. Tue.-Sun. Call 314-588-0055 for more info. The full press release is available after the jump.

Opening on December 16, 2008, El Borracho Mexican Cantina adds another exciting new dining option to downtown's expanding restaurant scene. El Borracho is a joint venture between nightlife veterans Pete Ferretti and Buddy Coy of LoungeConcepts (Pepper Lounge, Mandarin) and restaurateurs Pat Shannon and Gary VanMatre Jr. (Mike Shannon's). "El Borracho adds another unique food and drink venue to the 20th & Locust district as it continues to develop into one of the city's premier dining, private event, and nightlife destinations," states Buddy Coy, one of the owners of LoungeConcepts. "Following our successful partnership at Lumen Event Space down the street, it made great sense for all of us to collaborate once again on this project," adds Pat Shannon.

El Borracho's menu, created by executive chef/partner John Griffiths, features affordable fresh authentic Mexican food that is "drunk" with flavors- patrons will be able to customize signature items such as tacos, burritos, and tamales, in either authentic Mexican or Americanized "Gringo" style. El Borracho will also feature specialty drinks made with fresh-squeezed juices such as the signature Borracho margarita, an exotic avocado-mango margarita, and the Paloma cocktail, a southern Mexican favorite made with Jarritos grapefruit soda.

El Borracho's 2100 square-foot space, which formerly housed Nectar Lounge, has been completely transformed and now evokes a "Tarantino-meets-Tijuana" vibe with a custom mural by the artist Pepto, authentic Mexican artwork in custom studded frames, and a dramatic back bar created from 50 year old saw-cut hickory . "Consistent with El Borracho's name, we wanted to create a space that was spirited and full of life," states Pete Ferretti, who oversaw the design and buildout of the restaurant/bar. The venue also has a large number of high-definition TVs making the cantina an ideal downtown option for game viewing.

El Borracho is located at 2001 Locust Street in downtown St. Louis and will be open Tuesday-Sunday from 4PM-1:30AM. The cantina will serve food and drink during all hours of operation and will also offer a happy hour from 4PM-6:30PM daily with $3 house margaritas and $3 draft beer pitchers.
