As far as cred-building résumés go, few groups can get near the Bo-Keys. The instrumental Memphis group has its roots in that city's best-loved soul acts: guitarist Skip Pitts used his wah-wah pedal to make Isaac Hayes' Shaft soundtrack a funk masterpiece, baritone sax man Floyd Newman was a part of the Stax Records stable, and trumpeter Ben Cauley survived the plane crash the claimed Otis Redding's life. Bassist and producer Scott Bomar has gathered these greats and some young guns to pay homage to their town's R&B heritage while keeping the sound bristling with deep funk and soul grooves.
