He's been on the road for some 30 years; David Olney knows motel rooms. He'll count his take, read some Coleridge, work on a short story or a song, drink and watch heist flicks on the TV, if it works. He'll think about his mentors, Townes Van Zandt and Hank Williams, and plot his next move. His most recent move is David Olney Presents: Film Noir, a song cycle from the Blue Moon Hotel, where ever-plotting characters try to make it home again. He delivers each precise and gritty line in a rode-hard, put-away-cursed voice. No wonder everyone from Linda Ronstadt to Del McCoury is a fan. You should be too.

Recommended if you like: Reading Raymond Chandler while listening to Van Zandt on a night when the rain won't stop.
