Papa Grows Funk

Sunday, July 17; Broadway Oyster Bar (736 South Broadway)

Jul 13, 2005 at 4:00 am
No one vacations in New Orleans in July, and for good reason: Imagine taking the spilled drinks and body fluids from Bourbon Street and baking them in a convection oven all day. It's a funky experience -- and not in a good way. The heat gets so unbearable that the Crescent City's finest musicians temporarily abandon ship and head north for cooler climes. Lucky for us, Papa Grows Funk will be bringing its titular funk -- the good kind -- to town. Led by Hammond B3 expert and vocalist John Gros, the five-piece mixes the syncopated strut of the Meters with the bluesy call-and-response of Sonny Landreth. Enjoy some oysters while you watch the show, but make sure to wear something loose and comfy. Sitting still is not an option, and dancing is strongly encouraged.

Show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10; call 314-621-8811 for more information.
