Alton, Illinois, resident Allen Cordes, 51, was allegedly high and drunk when he slammed into a cyclist over the weekend.
James Allen Stewart, 50, was riding his bike when Cordes struck him. Stewart, an Alton resident, did not survive.
The Madison County State's Attorneys Office has since issued formal charges against Cordes, and a spokeswoman tells us that he remains in custody. He has a hearing set for April 26 next week.
What caused the collision?
Alton police tell us the official report isn't available, but say that he was drunk and high on marijuana when he hit Stewart at around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday near East Broadway and Milton Road.
It appears that the suspect was in a van when he hit the victim, knocked him off of the bike and then ran over him.
The formal charges, on view below, include two counts of aggravated driving while under the influence, causing death related to his levels of alcohol and cannabis:
