Yesterday, May 3, Craig Newmark spoke at a memorial service for Katherine Olson, a 24-year-old Minnesotan murdered after she answered a help wanted ad for a babysitter on Craigslist.

During his address, Newmark also mentioned the recent slaying of a New York woman who met a man in a hotel to offer him a private, erotic dance. A Boston University medical student is accused of shooting the woman four times, killing her.

"Despite the billions of times well-meaning people have helped each other through Craigslist, it's been devastating to see that it can also be used by bad people to take cruel advantage of others and bring a senseless end to a beautiful young life,"  Newmark said. "The most recent crime in Boston has been a grim reminder of that."
